Review of landscape perspective.
Students are inspired by the work of Pop artists like Warhol, Lichtenstein and Thiebaud.
We are using the technique of one point perspective to create tunnel aquariums. Students are currently researching ocean life.
5th graders received a STEM challenge this week: build a bridge out of 50 craft sticks and two feet of masking tape!

Art Clinic 2016-Mr. sissel's class
Students used the one point perspective technique to create these optical illusions. In most cases complimentary colors were applied to create high contrast which highlights their three dimensional quality.
Van Gogh Sunflower Replications. Students used oil pastel to reproduce their piece of the "puzzle".
Student's in Mr. Sissel's class are designing personal flags using Microsoft Word documents. They recently researched flags of various countries and decided that flag have symbolism, bold color and simplified shapes.
Students learned the art of Zentangle. They filled a pumpkin with a different pattern or design. The outcome was very three dimensional!
Art room color wheel. You can reference this as you study for the test!
Students are using one point perspective to create a city. Contrasting color and shape are the goals to help achieve details.
2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR
Fifth graders are studying optical illusions. We learned that straight lines tend to make things look flat and curved lines can make objects look more round or three dimensional. After tracing their hands students applied contrasting colors to create the illusion of a hand rising from the paper.
5th graders are researching mythical dragons. The challege is to draw a fantasy creatures in a realistic way. we will be gluing this to actual photographic backgrounds to promote realism.
Our abstract drawings are being transferred to abstract clay bowls! Students slabbed out a piece of clay then used a circle stencil to start the shape of their bowls. Part of the design from their oil pastel work was carved into the surface of the bowl. The clay slabs were then molded over foam bowls to take their shape. Scroll down to see Hunter Mann teaching Mr. H how to make his own!
5th graders are exploring abstract art through the works of Wassily Kandinsky. Abstract art is based on shape and color and has no recognizable subject. Students used rulers and stencils to create a composiiton based on geometric shape. Some chose to use free form shapes as well. Since abstract art is about personal expression, students chose colors based on their own feelings.
Fifth graders started the new year with a community art contest sponsered by the Anita B Gorman Conservation Discovery Center. The theme is "Nature in Your Neighborhood". Each student selected a bird native to our state and included a dogwood tree in the background. Entires will be submitted in February and winning entries will be announced early March. This project helps students strengthen their life-drawing skills along with a sense of proportion, value, texture and shape.
Ms. Cargyle's class earned the most points in fifth grade for first semester. They chose several different activites for their free-choice art day which included modeling clay, designing puzzles and using laptops for imagery.
In part two of the Andy Warhol Pop Art project students cover the back of their animal picture with pencil. The animal is then traced and the details are automatically transferred to another piece of paper. The outlines are then traced in sharpie and colors are selected to make the animasl contrast. We used the color wheel to guide our decision making process concerning color. Complimentary colors (colors across from one another on the color wheel) were chosen plus one accent color.
5th graders are learning about the famous Pop Artist Andy Warhol. He liked to use common, every day items like soup cans, famous peole and animals as the subject of his work. Students brought their laptops to art to research an animal for their project. We learned many interesting facts and found some super cool images!
