We studied the traditional folk arts of Mexico. We learned that women make huipils, a type of tunic that is brightly colored and heavily patterned. Students used oil pastels to layer details on strips of paper. Other types of scrap papers were added for further detailing.
First graders are studying Australia and the Dreamtime paintings done by the Aborigine people. Students drew pictures of Baru, a 17 foot crocodile from Australia who now resides in the Toledo zoo. They will be making Dreamtime backgrounds for Baru using circles and wavy lines.
Students in Mrs. Dickson's class are learning how to place primaries and secondaries in order according to the color wheel.
First graders are making Japanese kimono out of paper. We studied kimono pictures and decided that detailed line patterns would make wonderful designs. They are applying bright watercolor to make color pattern as well.
2013-14 School Year
First graders are using warm colors to create penguins! We watched a clip from the movie Happy Feet and discussed how dancing and music make us feel happy. Warm colors are often associated with happy feelings.
Mrs. Comstock's class earned the most points for being respectful, responsible, safe, problem solvers in first grade! They chose to spend their free choice day drawing, playing twister hopscotch, building with blocks and using modeling clay.
We are working on texture. Texture is the way things feel when you touch them. We glued shapes on a white piece of paper. Then we covered our paper with another sheet and did a crayon rubbing to see the texture underneath.
This is Ms. Pietroburgo's class making silhouettes. First we used white chalk to make a moon and lines for a landscape. Then we smudged the chalk to make a glowing effect. We used straws to blow thin paint into a tree.
